Your Body Whispers Before It Screams: 5 Somatic Practices to Prevent Burnout and Stop People-Pleasing

"Daring to set boundaries is about having the courage to love ourselves even when we risk disappointing others."— Brené Brown

Have you ever reached the end of the week feeling completely exhausted, even though you haven't done anything particularly extraordinary?

Perhaps you've been experiencing headaches, digestive issues, anxiety, poor sleep or that familiar feeling of running on empty.

You tell yourself you just need a holiday...

Or a better morning routine.

Or to become more organised.

But what if burnout isn't simply about doing too much?

What if it's about ignoring what your body has been trying to tell you for months—or even years?

As a Somatic Coach and Trauma-Informed Wellbeing Practitioner, I've learnt that our bodies are incredibly intelligent.

Long before burnout arrives, the body whispers.

The question is...

Are we listening?

The Hidden Link Between People-Pleasing and Burnout

One of the biggest contributors to burnout isn't always workload.

It's people-pleasing.

Many of us grew up believing that being kind meant putting everyone else first.

We became the dependable friend.

The reliable colleague.

The peacemaker.

The one who never wanted to disappoint anyone.

Somewhere along the way we stopped asking ourselves one simple question:

What do I need?

Every time we ignore our own needs, our nervous system notices.

Every time we say yes when our whole body wants to say no, we create a small disconnect between ourselves and our body's wisdom.

Over time, those small moments accumulate.

Eventually they can become emotional exhaustion, chronic stress or burnout.

Your Nervous System Is Always Communicating

Your body doesn't suddenly wake up one day in burnout.

It gives you clues.

These might include:

  • Constant fatigue despite sleeping well

  • Frequent headaches or migraines

  • Digestive problems

  • Muscle tension

  • Anxiety

  • Brain fog

  • Irritability

  • Feeling emotionally numb

  • Struggling to switch off

These are often signs that your nervous system has been under stress for too long.

From a trauma-informed perspective, these symptoms aren't signs that your body is failing you.

They're signs that it's trying to protect you.

What Is Somatic Coaching?

Somatic coaching is a body-based approach to emotional wellbeing.

Instead of only asking,

"What are you thinking?"

we also ask,

"What are you noticing in your body?"

This simple shift helps us reconnect with our nervous system and develop greater self-awareness.

Your body often recognises safety, overwhelm, alignment and boundaries long before your conscious mind does.

Learning to notice these signals is one of the most effective ways to prevent burnout.

5 Somatic Practices to Help Prevent Burnout

1. Pause Before Saying Yes

The next time someone asks something of you, don't answer immediately.

Take one slow breath.

Ask yourself:

What does my body say?

Notice whether your chest softens or tightens.

Notice your breathing.

Your body often knows the answer before your mind catches up.

2. Practise Saying No

Choose one small opportunity this week to say no.

Allow yourself to feel uncomfortable for sixty seconds.

Take slow breaths.

Remember:

Guilt is a feeling.

It isn't proof you've done something wrong.

3. Find Your Full-Body Yes

Stand comfortably.

Say the word "Yes" aloud several times.

Notice how your body responds.

Does it feel expansive?

Relaxed?

Or tense?

Many people discover there's a huge difference between a genuine yes and a people-pleasing yes.

4. Try the Standing Sway Test

Stand with your feet hip-width apart.

Close your eyes.

Take a few slow breaths.

Notice how your body naturally responds as you consider different choices or statements.

This isn't about predicting the future.

It's about developing greater awareness of your body's subtle responses.

5. Listen Before the Body Has to Shout

One of my favourite reminders is this:

Your body whispers before it screams.

The whispers are gentle.

Fatigue.

Tension.

Restlessness.

Resentment.

When we ignore those whispers for long enough, they often become much louder.

Learning to listen early is one of the greatest gifts we can give ourselves.

Burnout Prevention Starts with Boundaries

Brené Brown often says:

"Choose discomfort over resentment."

I love this because healthy boundaries often feel uncomfortable at first.

Disappointing someone else for a moment is often far kinder than abandoning yourself repeatedly.

Boundaries aren't about pushing people away.

They're about creating relationships where everyone—including you—matters.

Final Thoughts

Most of us were never taught how to regulate our nervous systems.

We weren't taught how to recognise the early signs of burnout.

We weren't taught that our bodies hold wisdom.

The good news is that these are skills we can learn at any stage of life.

The next time your body whispers, pause.

Listen.

Trust what you notice.

Your body has been trying to protect you all along.
