Do you struggle with back pain or maybe you have tight shoulders and have tried everything to relieve it but are still in pain? Did you know that we have something called a stretch reflex?
It means that unless the brain is actively involved in the process your muscles will ping back to their original setting.So, although stretching feels wonderful it won’t release your tight muscles for the long term.
These classes use pandiculations which are small movements that work with neuroplasticity to re-train your brain to send the message of rest and relax to your muscles. Pain, stiffness and reduced mobility is often associated with something that Thomas Hanna coined SMA (sensory motor amnesia). This is where the brain is stuck in a loop, sending signals that tell the muscles to remain switched “on”. Somatics “reminds” the brain to let muscles relax and rest again, leaving you able to move more freely in your body, experience less pain, feel more relaxed, as well as lift your mood!
